TikTok video won’t play after downloading? How to fix it
Most of the time, a downloaded TikTok that won’t play is an HEVC file on a device that can’t decode HEVC. Here is how to tell, and how to fix it in a minute.
Why it happens
TikTok keeps its sharpest versions (720p and 1080p) in HEVC, also called H.265. HEVC makes files smaller, but not every device can decode it. The typical signs:
- the video plays sound but a black or frozen picture;
- Windows says the file needs a codec or “HEVC Video Extensions”;
- a video editor, older phone or TV refuses to import it.
Fix 1: download the “Plays everywhere” version
Paste the TikTok link into TikTok to MP4 again and choose the file marked Plays everywhere. It is H.264, which every device made in the last fifteen years can play. The picture is a little softer, but it always works.
Fix 2: play it with VLC
VLC media player is free, plays HEVC on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone, and needs no extra codec.
Fix 3: add HEVC to Windows
Open the Microsoft Store and search for HEVC Video Extensions. Some computers already include a free version from the manufacturer; otherwise Microsoft charges a small fee. After installing it, restart the Media Player or Photos app and the video plays.
Fix 4: check the file itself
- The file is 0 KB or won’t open at all: the download was interrupted or the link expired. Paste the TikTok link again for a fresh download.
- The video has no sound: some posts are silent, and TikTok removes music from some posts for copyright reasons. In that case the original file has no sound either.
- The picture is blurry: choose a higher resolution. If the highest one is 540p, that is the quality the creator uploaded.
